How this sales tax calculator works

Provide any two of: before-tax price, sales tax rate (%), and after-tax total. The missing value is computed using standard retail sales tax math (tax applied once on the pre-tax amount): after = before × (1 + rate/100), before = after ÷ (1 + rate/100), or rate = (after − before) ÷ before × 100.

What is sales tax?

Sales tax is a consumption tax on retail sales of goods and certain services. The seller collects it from the buyer and remits it to state and local authorities. In the U.S. there is no federal sales tax; rates and exemptions vary by state and locality. Many other countries use VAT or GST instead.

US sales tax by state — reference table

Five states have no statewide sales tax: Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire, and Oregon. Alaska and some other states still allow local taxes. The table lists typical state base rates and approximate maximum combined rates where local add-ons apply. Always confirm the exact rate for your address on your state or local revenue site before relying on these figures for compliance.

State vs local layers

Your checkout total often combines state, county, city, and special-district rates. Example: California's state base is 7.25%, but a city like Los Angeles can push the combined rate above 10%. The dropdown in the calculator only fills the state reference column — add local percentages manually when you know them.

Exemptions and holidays

Groceries, prescriptions, clothing, and other items may be exempt or taxed differently depending on the state. Many states run short sales tax holidays (e.g. back-to-school). Rules change often — verify with official guidance.

Deducting sales tax on federal returns

You can deduct sales tax only if you itemize and choose to deduct sales tax instead of state income tax (not both). Most filers take the standard deduction. Large purchases can make sales tax deduction worth modeling — see Income Tax Calculator for a broad federal estimate, and a tax professional for itemization.

VAT and GST

VAT is charged at multiple stages of production; businesses usually reclaim tax on inputs. GST behaves similarly in countries like Canada, Australia, and India. Listed prices abroad often include VAT; in the U.S. shelf prices are usually pre-tax and tax is added at checkout.

Formulas

  • After tax = Before tax × (1 + rate/100)
  • Before tax = After tax ÷ (1 + rate/100)
  • Rate % = (After tax − Before tax) ÷ Before tax × 100

Frequently asked questions

Rates by state, exemptions, VAT, and federal deductions.

What is the sales tax rate in my state?

Use the reference table on this page for the general state rate and an approximate maximum when local taxes are included. Your exact rate depends on city, county, and special districts — check your state department of revenue or a rate lookup tool keyed to your address.

Which states have no sales tax?

There is no statewide sales tax in Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire, and Oregon. Alaska can still have local sales taxes in some jurisdictions.

How do I calculate sales tax?

Multiply the pre-tax price by the rate expressed as a decimal: tax = price × (rate/100). The total is price + tax, or price × (1 + rate/100). This calculator solves for any one of price, rate, or total when the other two are known.

Can I deduct sales tax on my federal taxes?

Only if you itemize deductions and elect to deduct sales tax instead of state and local income tax (you cannot claim both). Most people use the standard deduction. Large purchases can make the sales tax option worth comparing.

What items are exempt from sales tax?

Exemptions vary by state. Common examples include unprepared groceries, prescriptions, and some medical items in many states. Always verify current rules for your location and product category.

What is the difference between sales tax and VAT?

U.S. retail sales tax is generally collected once at the point of sale to the consumer. VAT is applied at multiple supply-chain stages with credits for business inputs; the end consumer bears the net burden. VAT is common outside the U.S.

Is there a federal sales tax in the US?

No. Sales taxes are imposed at state and local levels. The federal government relies mainly on income and payroll taxes plus excises on specific goods.

How is sales tax different from an excise tax?

Sales tax is broad-based on many retail purchases. Excise taxes target specific products (fuel, tobacco, alcohol, etc.) and are often set per unit or as a dedicated percentage on those goods.

Why do US price tags usually exclude tax?

Rates differ by state, county, and city, so national retailers often show pre-tax prices and add tax at checkout. In many VAT countries, displayed consumer prices include the tax.

Who uses this calculator

Shoppers estimating out-the-door totals, travelers comparing rates, employees splitting pre-tax and tax on receipts, small businesses checking quick math before using a full point-of-sale system, and anyone who needs to back into a pre-tax price or implied rate from a final charge.
